VMLY&R Melbourne and Monash University challenged us to develop a Virtual Reality application to complement the physical activation of ‘Future Without Change’ and extend it into the future.
The bold new activation provokes audiences to consider the consequences of inaction on issues like a failing health system, mental health, education, environmental issues, the spread of superbugs and cyber-crime.
The VR experience was designed exclusively for the new standalone VR solution; the Oculus Quest. This $600 all-in-one device allowed for low hardware and setup costs at the activation and up to six users to experience the virtual world simultaneously. The final version will be available to millions of owners on the Oculus Quest store.
Developing for a device with such low graphics capabilities was a fantastic challenge. We eked every last bit of performance out of the Quest and developed a visual style that looked great and immersed users.
